Kapa‘a’s Lyndsey Tom defeated Jackie Owens in the girls’ 14 singles final match for the championship at the USTA-Aloha Airlines Junior Sectionals, held on O‘ahu from June 10-13.
Kaua‘i’s Mikaiah Vea also took home the first-place prize with a win over fellow Kauaian, Chas Okamoto in the boys’ 12 singles championship.
Kaua‘i’s Jordan Kukino made it to the consolation bracket of the boys’ 18 singles contest, but withdrew due to an injury.
Island School’s Justin Vea also made it to the consolation bracket, but fell to Jonell Magdaong in the boys’ 16 singles competition.
KIF not affected by HHSAA changes
The vote to increase the sizes of the division II state tournaments in girls basketball and softball from four teams to eight has been ratified.
Meanwhile, division I state tournaments in the two sports will drop from 12 to eight teams. The decision doesn’t affect the KIF.
Father’s Day fishing
The Nawiliwili Yacht Club will be hosting their annual Father’s Day fishing derby this Sunday, June 19 in front of their NYC clubhouse at the Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor.
Registration starts from 10 a.m. with fishing being done in different age categories as well as fish categories.
Hot dogs and cold drinks will be available for anglers and their families. Fleet Captain Bill Georgi is the event chairperson for this year’s derby.
Port Allen Fishing Derby coming up
The Port Allen Fishing Club was first formed in the 1950’s by local fishermen with a common interest in promoting the building of a boat harbor at Port Allen. The Derby began as a way for fishermen to show off their skills, enjoy a little friendly competition and share the day with their ohana and friends.
The Fishing Derby will be held at the Port Allen Small Boat Harbor starting at 6 a.m. on the morning of July 16 and ending at 4 p.m., to be followed by a Luau and Awards Ceremony. There will be prizes for the winning fishermen and Lucky Number Drawings for additional prizes donated by sponsors.
The Port Allen Fishing Derby is very popular with Kauai fishermen. Last year 48 boats entered the Derby and even more are expected to participate this year. Family members and friends can purchase luau tickets and join the fishermen for lots of “Ono Grinds”. Derby T-Shirts will also be available for sale.
To request an entry form contact: Ed Horner 808-634-6852 days/808-337-1701 evenings, Jim Horner 808-639-2508 days/808-332-8213 evenings or Willie Abara 808-335-5080. The deadline for submitting an application is July 11th. Please register early as a large turnout is expected this year.
Get involved with junior golf
“Celebrate with Junior Golf” is a clever concept which allows golfers regardless of abilities to contribute to Kaua‘i Jr. Golf Association and all high schools on Kaua‘i. Since its implementation in the fall of 2004, approximately 100 golfers have committed to participate in this novel way of supporting junior golf on Kaua‘i.
With the Kaua‘i High School golf team doing so well in the state championships over the last two years, supporting their efforts, and every other golfer in the junior golf association is such a rewarding endeavor.
June is the last month for those willing to participate. They have set aside June 25, a Saturday, for one last chance for those who haven’t yet participated in this program.
They are hoping that golfers on that Saturday will accept the challenge, which will take place at the Wailua Golf Course. To learn more on how you can become a participant, call Art Fujita at 822-4158.
