NHL finally back on the ice

NEW YORK — The NHL lockout that canceled last season came to an end Friday when the owners of the league’s 30 teams unanimously approved a labor deal that clears the way for play to resume in the fall.
“Today our board of governors gave its unanimous approval to a collective bargaining agreement that signals a new era for our league,” commissioner Gary Bettman said at a news conference. “An era of economic stability for our franchises, an era of heightened competitive balance for our players, an era of unparalleled excitement and entertainment for our fans.”
It also begins the era of the salary cap — the very thing the union vowed not to accept when the lockout began. But a majority of players supported the six-year agreement in balloting Thursday, with 464 of 532 (87 percent) voting in favor.
“Let’s drop the puck on a fresh start and a wonderful future for the National Hockey League,” Bettman said.
No payroll will exceed $39 million or go under $21.5 million next season — including salaries, signing bonuses and performance bonuses.
Akana comes home with numerous awards
Kaua‘i’s Kapili Akana fought in the red belt and under division and got to the championship fight, but was disqualified with a 15 second penalty in the last round for an illegal kick to the head. She fought the California state champion in the U.S.A. World Championships held at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, from June 17-19.
Kenn Firestone continued his torrid pace with a firstplace finish in the black belt sparring contest, gaining grand champion honors. He was promoted to 8th degree black belt.
Elusha Weiss fought in the brown belt contest and came away with a third-place win. Also competing were Ben Bregman and Allen Dynes.
Racing school comes to Kaua‘i
Final Phase Contracting, along with Scooters, and Honsador Lumber present a day with Team WBR Suzuki and David Bailey’s MX School from November 4-5.
There will be lots of giveaways including four WBR race bikes on November 6. Raffle tickets are $35 and for more information, contact Chris at 652-6468 or 822-1900.
Lihu‘e battles Rookies for senior title
East Kaua‘i put themselves from the driver’s seat to the back seat with two losses on Saturday, July 9.
The miscues dropped them to fourth-place in the league, instead of being crowned the second round champion.
As a result, the Lihu‘e A’s grabbed the second round title and a shot for the league title against first round champion Rookies squad.
The title game for the Kaua‘i Senior Softball League is set for today at 10 a.m. at ‘Ele‘ele Park.
