LIHU‘E — KQNG Radio disc jockey Ron Wiley was broadcasting live from the Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau fair, Sunday when he heard the explosive cheer. “They won!” he announced.
“Ewa Beach is the new world champions!” That said, he cut to commercial making his way over to the Oceanic Time Warner booth where baseball fans were reacting to the Michael Memea solo homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning that pushed Hawai‘i to its first Little League World Series title. Among the fans was J. Robertson, longtime sports announcer, who said, “When I left home, they (Ewa Beach) were trailing 6-3, and I didn’t feel good about it. But, this is great!” Robertson noted that Pearl City had gone so far as to capture the National title previously, but fell in the championship game.
Chef Dave Boucher was ecstatic to hear the outcome, quickly fishing out his cell phone and excusing himself, “Sorry, but I just gotta call this guy.”
