With the weather expected to be in unfavorable football conditions tonight, the second KIF contest of the season could mirror the first one — an extremely low-scoring affair.
The Warriors and Menehune were only able to muster up three points in the opener, thanks to Kenny Estes’ field goal, which gave Waimea the victory.
Kapa’a quarterback Waylan Kupihea will sit out tonight’s matchup against the two-time defending KIF champs. However, with a week off next week, the senior should be ready to go on Sept. 30 against the Menehune.
For the Red Raiders, both Kainoa Lemke and Andrew Renaud will see action at the QB spot.
“We’re going to rotate them. It was a rough week and they weren’t able to showcase their talents (enough). Either way, they are both equal right now,” Kaua’i head coach Keli’i Morgado said.
Defense and special teams should be the deciding factors of the contest, considering the good possibility of bad weather.
“Special teams can make or break a game. We need to get a jump on our opponent and hopefully come out on top,” Morgado said.
The Red Raider head man also noted that they were fortunate to have an extra week to prepare for the Warriors.
“They are always big and physical and that’s what concerns me,” Morgado mentioned.
Both teams are looking to get into the win columnn this season. Kapa’a can move to 1-1 with a win and the Red Raiders could put themselves in a first-place tie with the Menehune with a victory.
