Both Kalaheo School and the 29th Infantry Brigade, which is comprised of Kaua’i soldiers, shared $5,000 in supplies and goodies, thanks to the annual Wala’au Red, White, and Blue Golf Tournament, held in late July.
Almost 200 golfers from all walks of life converged at the beautiful Puakea Golf Course for some fun, golf, and fellowship.
However, the day was mostly reserved for the benefit of Kaua’i’s troops and Kalaheo School.
Big Kmart and Big Save officials stepped up with supplies for the southside school, and snacks for our troops.
The two first-class stores also gave the items at a discounted price, so the monies would be stretched further for more things.
“Both of them (managers of Big Kmart and Big Save) went beyond the call of duty,” “Wala’au’s” Dickie Chang said. “The Wizard” dropped off the items to Kalaheo School officials recently, and they were able to replenish all the classrooms before the school opened.
“The troops picked up their pallets of supplies this week, and they are currently being distributed to them,” Chang noted.
There are countless individuals who donated their time and effort for the great causes.
Special thanks goes out to the Kaua’i Lagoons Golf Course for the extra golf carts and Ricky Wa’alani, Marty Curnan, and Kauai Commercial for picking them up.
After the 18 holes of golf, the group of about 200 golfers were joined by others, who came for the food, drinks, silent auction, and more. King Auto Center’s Jose Aguayo was treated with a huge birthday cake, as the group sang Happy Birthday, to the “Five Star” gentleman.
“We gave out trips, prizes. I was extremely pleased with the turnout and support,” Chang said.
Fred Atkins at Kilohana, Ibaan Table Rentals, the Puakea Golf Course and its Grill and Bar deserve a big mahalo for helping out with the event.
Entertainers included Paul Togioka, Malani Bilyeau, Aloha Breeze, Shilo Pa Band, Puakea Band, Norman Ka’awa Soloman. The Kaua’i Marriot Resort & Beach Club banquet staff and John Bandmann are also big helpers for the cause.
Chang, who hosts the weekly show “Wala’au” on Oceanic Time Warner Cable channel 6, was floored by the support from the numerous individuals.
“Nobody said no to the event,” Chang said.
“It was overwhelming the amount of support we received. Obviously the recipients were the troops and Kalaheo School — both two great causes,” Chang said.
Chang mentioned that when he was looking for two recipients, both Kalaheo School and Kaua’i’s service men and women were the obvious choices. Right around the same time, the students at Kalaheo School were writing letters to the troops.
“It just kinda worked out for the better, and I’d like to thank every individual who came out and showed support,” Chang said.
