LIHU’E — Kaua’i head coach Keli’i Morgado said that special teams would be key and boy was he right.
Call him Superman, call him Batman, but more importantly, call him the savior for the Red Raider football team.
Junior Justyn JumawanPerreira made the biggest play of his life with a 45yard punt return touchdown last night at Vidinha Stadium, that handed the Red Raiders the slim 1312 win. JumawanPerreira also amassed over 130 yards in punt return yardage in the contest.
Both defenses played spectacular in the muddy, rainy conditions, which led to numerous fumbles. Both offenses were unable to spark any type of magic.
After a 76 halftime lead, Kaua’i fell behind early in the third quarter, thanks to Matt Roman’s 4yard punt block touchdown return for the Warriors. Ace Viceo made the big block, which enabled Roman to run the score in.
The Warriors held on for the remainder of the third quarter and most of the fourth, right up until JumawanPerreira electrified the goodsized Vidinha Stadium crowd, with his gamewinning TD.
Like last week against the Menehune, the Warriors had numerous chances to win the contest.
Kaua’i struck first with a 2-yard TD run by Jonathan Rellin with about 10 minutes to go in the second quarter, which was the first touchdown of the KIF football season. Frank Speetjens’ PAT was the difference at the half because the Warriors missed out on their PAT try, after a Coty Salausa 6-yard score.
Kapa’a drops to 02 on the season and Kaua’i moves into a firstplace tie with Waimea at 10.
