Formerly a star runner for Kapa’a High School, Sharlene Carillo is now one of the University of Hawai’i’s top crosscountry athletes. The Hawai’i women’s team opened its 2005 campaign at the Chaminade Invitational on Saturday, near BYUHawai’i’s campus in La’ie.

The Hawai’i women’s team opened its 2005 campaign at the Chaminade Invitational on Saturday, near BYUHawai’i’s campus in La’ie.
Carillo, a junior, is one of only five returning letterwinners on a squad that features lots of new talent.
Four of Hawai’i’s top runners last season (Kelly Young, Dana Buchanan, Sabrina Reeve, Danielle Binns) decided not to return to UH this year.
The 5’2″ runner also participates in track and field for UH.
She finished fourth in the 1500 meter run at the UH Sunset Meet and was named to the AllWAC Academic squad.
In crosscountry last year, Carillo posted four top 15 finishes, including a thirdplace showing at the HPU Invitational. She also captured Hawai’i’s top time at the Chaminade Invitational and competed in the WAC Championships.
Back in 2003, Carillo posted two top 15 finishes at the University of San Francisco Invitational and the UH CoedSprint Invitational.
The 2003 Kapa’a High School graduate plans to major in physical therapy and earned the crosscountry MVP award from 200103 at Kapa’a. Her parents are Darlene and Alvin Sasil.
