LIHU’E — You knew they’d win sometime and it happened to be last night at the Raiderdome, a place where Waimea girls head coach Chad Delanoza used to roam, as an assistant under Kaua’i head man Rich Roberts. The Menehune grabbed the win in five sets (22-25, 25-13, 25-16, 21-25, 15-4).
“It’s special to win here. I told the girls to scream and yell in the locker room, but as soon as they get out of the door, I told them to be humble and enjoy the win, but go home and scream and yell to,” Delanoza said.
Chaslee Delanoza, his daughter made the big plays throughout the match and came up big with two tough kills in the fifth set.
The win gave Delanoza his first victory as a high school head coach, a win he’ll never forget.
“This win is big for the community, for the school, for the coaches, but most importantly, for the players. I told them to believe in yourselves. They played together and I’m just so proud of them,” Delanoza said.
Cheri Kua, Tia Agader, and Banana Kajiwara also had good performances for Waimea.
Kaua’i seniors Kehau Judd and Tina Moger kept the match close once again with numerous kills.
In the boys match, the Red Raiders outplayed the Menehune and handed them a loss in three sets, 25-21, 25-22, 25-21.
Jordan “Buzzy Jr.” Cox and Ryan Nagaoka led the way in the hitting department for Kaua’i.
Clesson Lee was also instrumental in the win with superb sets and digs.
KIF volleyball continues on Saturday, as the Warriors host Waimea, starting at 5 p.m.
