Am I really that goofy?
By Duane Shimogawa Jr. – The Garden Island
Ok, goofiest and about it. I’ll admit it, sometimes I can be more goofy than other times, but this past Saturday, I was the there’s no doubt
However, instead of “acting” silly, I learned that I am goofy on a wake-board.
At the pristine Wailua River this past weekend, I finally got up on the wakeboard, but not before learning that I tried numerous times getting up the wrong way.
Up and coming surfer Dylan “Da Ripper” Goodale noticed after two unsuccessful tries, that I was a goofy footer.
The two previous times Dave “Mr. Brave” Bender of The National Tropical Botanical Gardens (NTBG) and Matt “Goodies” Goodale of W3DD.com, tried their hardest to help me rise up above the water.
But the most frustrating part was the fact that there were a couple of other boats out and follwing them were small children, who were tearing it up and saying “Suck My Wake,” silently in my ears, as I fell flat on my face time after time.
I knew it wouldn’t have taken 20 times to finally cruise on a wakeboard, but I almost started to get that feeling on Saturday after not attaining any success after a couple of tries.
But when I finally got up on the board after Goodale’s good deed, it was one of the best feelings that I’ve ever felt (at least top five, but the top two couldn’t be mentioned here in the paper).
There’s really no feeling like it. It’s almost as if you are able to eat your favorite dish, everyday for the rest of your life.
It’s addicting and Bender’s “Quiksilver Jr.” boat is my new favorite mode of transportation, even considering the high price of gas today.
Bender and the Goodale brothers are extremely skilled at it and I hope to rise to their level with more practice.
But I was just as happy to cruise up and down the greenish Wailua River, passing the slow as a turtle Smith’s boat tours, which were filled with tourists, who wished they were being serenaded by the speed of our boat, instead of the not-so-charming sounds of the Titanicsized boat they were cruising in.
After being chased away by the incoming storm, the next day muscle pains came into play.
Both Goodale and Bender reminded me that there was a small price to pay after flying through the river on a wake-board — unwanted pain in areas that are rarely utilized.
However, I can definitely tell you that it’s worth it and I know that both Goodale and Bender attest to that as well.
So as I gladly shot both of my arms towards the sunny Wailua sky on Sunday, after my first stint at actually getting up on the board, I knew right away that nothing is as hard as you think.
I mean all you need is someone to help you out, or in my case, all I needed was Goodale, to tell me that I’m “Goofy!”
