Mark this one down in the Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation junior-varsity history books, as both the Kaua’i High School JV volleyball teams captured the inaugural round-robin-format championships.
“I think the kids adjusted well to the format. I thought it was pretty good and convenient,” Red Raider assistant coach Tom Clements said.
The Kaua’i girls’ team consisted of a good mix of sophomores and freshman. The championship squad included Keila Curtis, Bryanna Prinzing, Courtney Wilson, who Clements called, “The Great Wall of Courtney,” Alyssa Carvalho, Tiana Esaki, Krystal Ijima, Jessica Iwata, Jori Jasper (a transfer from Island School), Jamie Jimenez, Kimi Masumura, Wynona Rosa, Jewell Villatora (starting setter), and Mikaila Naholoholo. “Mikaila stepped in for Jewell as the setter in our last games. She got the win when we needed it,” Clements said.
Clements wife, Donna, a pretty good volleyball player in her own right, completed her very first high-school coaching experience.
“I thought it was a real success. At least on my part, I’m going to take two weeks off to decide if I want to do it again next year, if asked,” Tom Clements said.
Meanwhile, the Red Raider boys, led by Basil Walton and Travis Stine, won the KIF JV volleyball title.
Head coach Jacque Inouye did double duty, as she also assisted boys’ varsity head coach Lorna Tresler-Basquez.
The 2004-05 championship squad is comprised of Eric Cansino, Ryan Ichikawa, Justin Ramos, Sheadon Ringor, Stine, Walton, Cameron Takamura, Kyle Wong, Mark Udarbe, Noa Chun, and Jared Matsumoto, who was picked up by the varsity team after the first game of the second round.
