PUHI — The third time was a charm for Amanda Savage.
Savage, running for the Kaua’i High School girls KIF cross country team, collapsed after a lap in the first meet at Kula. Trying again at the second meet at Kapa’a High School, Savage was among the leaders coming in, but was disqualified. On Saturday, Savage finished clean in seventh place overall, but third for Kaua’i with her 23:32:00 time. She was closely followed by teammate Tara Mc-Coy to lock up the fourth Kaua’i berth at eighth overall, stopping the clock at 23:35:00.
Leanna Carvalho iced the Kaua’i girls’ win at 13th overall to give the Raiders a total of 34 points followed by Waimea at 45 points. Kapa’a, who topped the race last week, settled at third with 57 points and Island School finished with 174 points.
Raider Chelsea Smith-Wishard topped the field with a 20:25.00 finish, almost a minute and a half ahead of second finisher Rachel Martin of Waimea who stopped the clock at 21:50:00. Gillian Pickett of Kula School settled at third overall with a 22:23:00, and Kapa’a’s Alexandra Pond tripped the clock at 22:40:00 in fourth place overall, but first for Kapa’a.
Andrianna Mendivil (23:07:00) of Kaua’i crossed. Carolyn Hoeckman-Percival (23:11:00) crossed before Savage and McCoy. This group was followed by Erin Pickett of Kapa’a (24:10:00) and Waimea’s Sonya Tacub (24:23:00) and Laura Hudson (24:31:00) before Kapa’a’s freshman runner Kirsten Mc-Cracken crossed at 24:38:00, 12th overall, and third for Kapa’a. Scott Martin was just six seconds shy of beating a 17-minute time in his first finish in the boys’ race. He was closely dogged by brother Nathan Martin, who crossed second overall at 17:51:00, almost a minute ahead of third finisher Ben Baldwin (18:55:00) and Chris Marsh (19:09:00) of Island School.
The one-two punch of Waimea and Island School set the stage for the boys race as Waimea got strong showings from Kaimano Girod (19:30:00) and Roldan M. Villanueva (20:34:00) to lock up first place with 41 points over Island School’s 49 points.
Kapa’a, who sent in four runners between fifth and 10th place overall, finished third with 51 points followed by Kaua’i who finished with 76 points.
Chance Bukoski (19:11:00), fifth overall, was the first Kapa’a runner followed by Adam Kerlin (19:22:00), Alex Lamadrid (19:37:00), and Alex Sosa (19:41:00) in sixth, eighth, and ninth place overall.
Agustin Garcia (20:12:00) was the first Kaua’i runner, Garcia finishing 10th overall followed by Frank Speetjens in 11th over-all at 20:22:00. KIF cross country shifts to Waimea on Saturday at 9 a.m.
