Pine Trees hosts Macy’s event today

Some of the best surfers on the island will be ripping it up on the northshore today in a first-ever event of its kind on Kaua’i.
In its fourth season, the Macy’s E-Series has been very successful with its pro/am surfing series on the island of O’ahu. With the goal to educate and promote Hawai’i’s surfing youth, the Macy’s E-Series will be holding its first-ever event on a neighbor island. The Quik-silver Pro and Roxy Pro will be held at Pine Trees in Hanalei today, which is the second stop on the Macy’s E-Series Tour.
Traditionally the Macy’s E-Series has showcased the best men’s shortboard and longboard surfers from around the state. Because of the huge response for the Kaua’i event, contest officials have decided to add a women’s shortboard division to the event.
“It has been long overdue to have a women’s division in this series, and the feedback from the Kaua’i surfers is the women’s division will fill up fast,” executive director Bert Ishimaru said.

There are 48 slots for men’s shortboard, 32 slots for women’s shortboard, and 16 slots for men’s longboard.
James released from hospital
CLEVELAND — Cavaliers All-Star forward LeBron James was released from the hospital Friday following a two-night stay because of a virus that caused severe pain in his chest.
James was hospitalized Wednesday for what the team initially called a strained pectoral muscle. But Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry said Friday that James came down with pleurisy, an inflammation of the thin layers of tissue covering his lungs and chest cavity.
The 20-year-old is being treated with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication, and the team said it expects James to make a “quick, full recovery.”
Illinois appeals NCAA nickname ruling
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The University of Illinois has appealed an NCAA ruling that could bar the school from hosting championship events at its Urbana-Champaign campus because of the school’s nickname and mascot.
The long-expected appeal accuses the NCAA of unfairly characterizing the “Illini” and “Fighting Illini” nicknames and Chief Illiniwek mascot as “hostile and abusive,” Board of Trustees Chairman Lawrence C. Eppley said in his six-page appeal letter. The letter, which was released Friday, was accompanied by 21 pages of supporting documentation.
Bruschi may return this year
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — New England linebacker Tedy Bruschi is working toward a return to the Patriots — this season, not next — thanks to a faster-than-expected recovery from the stroke that sent him to the emergency room just days after playing in his first Pro Bowl.
Several obstacles remain: Bruschi has received favorable reports from doctors but not final medical clearance, and others involved in the decision — including the team’s lawyers and Bruschi’s family — have not signed off on it. Bruschi said this summer he had no intention of coming back for the 2005 season. But the speed of his rehabilitation has made it possible for him to accelerate his schedule.
Vikings owner embarrassed by scandal
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Minnesota Vikings owner Zygi Wilf is angry and embarrassed over accounts of drunkenness and sexual misbehavior by his players on a charter cruise, and said Friday the team will now have a conduct code. Wilf, in his first comments since the boat party last week, said he has apologized to the governor.
