They’re called the Kalaheo Oreos not because they’re sponsored by the popular cookie company, instead they are followed by a mascot named Cookie and they simply wear jerseys that are black and white.
Recently, the Oreos, a U12 girls AYSO soccer squad, tasted a thrilling victory in playoff action, which catapulted them to the championship game that kicks off today, at 9 a.m. at Kalawai Park against the team they beat in the first round, the Lihu’e Imua.
“We lost a couple of games during the season, but when we’ve been in the playoffs, we haven’t lost,” Oreo head coach Sue Shot said.
Kalaheo also completed a successful shootout campaign against Imua and as five players went up for the big score, it came down to the last shooter, Tori Kobayashi, who slammed home the winner.
“I told her right before she went up for the kick that I don’t mean to pressure you out, but you’re the last shooter and you have to make this,” Shot said.
Goalie Christina Pearson played strong in the net for the Oreos, by blocking three shooutout shots.
“It was such teamwork. My team is the most incredibly most put together team. It doesn’t matter who scores. It’s the most team-oriented team I’ve ever coached,” Shot mentioned.
Shot has coached for seven years and also coaches for HYSA.
“I’ve had the most fabulous season. At first I thought I didn’t have enough skills (to coach). I stopped playing when I was 12. I’ve had the most wonderful parents. We did a night time reef walk with them and it really made a difference because we bonded so well,” Shot said.
The championship game is set for today, as the Oreos meet up with Imua at 9 a.m. at Kalawai Park.
“They’ve gotta beat us twice. I wanna win the first one and end the season,” Shot said.
