The annual Waimea Cross Country Invitational last week Saturday was just
a tease of what’s to come in the 2005-06 KIF cross-country season, which
kicks off tomorrow on the campus of Kula High and Intermediate at 4 p.m.
No surprises this season and Kaua‘i junior Chelsea Smith-Wishard and
Waimea senior Scott Martin want it to stay that way.
The blue flash (Martin) and the red rover (Smith-Wishard) dominated last
season and won every meet, from KCC to Kula.
The two runners also have state titles on their mind with impressive
showings at the prestigious Iolani Invitational earlier this season.
Waimea’s Rachel and Nathan Martin should follow up Martin and Smith-
Wishard in their respective divisions. Last year’s KIF title holders
were the Kapa‘a girls, led by Alex Pond and the Island School boys, who
added noted Mokihana Aquatics swimmer Ben Baldwin to their arsenal.
This year, Kaua‘i will host the state cross country meet, which hasn’t
happened for four years.
“For awhile, Kukuiolono played host and the last time it was at Island
School,” Island School admissions director Sean Magoun said.
KCC (Kaua‘i Community College) will be the host course and it might
change a bit.
“It’s an excellent spectator event. We might do a 1.5 mile course..so
the kids do it twice,” Magoun said.
Also this year, both the boys and girls will run three-mile courses at
the state level. The KIF adopted the three-mile course last season, even
though the state meet didn’t.
