One person died of injuries at the scene of a two-car crash Monday morning on Kuhio Highway near mile marker 1 in Kapaia, a short distance from Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where four other victims were transported after the accident.
According to Kaua’i County Public Information Officer Mary Daubert, one of the injured people was later flown via air ambulance to The Queen’s Medical Center on O’ahu.
Kaua’i Police Department officials believe that speed was a factor in the crash.
The victim, who has not yet been identified, is the sixth person to die on Kaua’i roadways this year. The identities of the victims, or their conditions, were not known at presstime yesterday.
Traffic backed up on Kuhio Highway for miles in both directions as KPD officers closed off the highway for several hours while the investigation took place.
One of the vehicles ended up with its roof on the Kuhio Highway pavement, smashed almost to the point where it was difficult to tell it was even a vehicle.
Police, Kaua’i Fire Department and American Medical Response ambulance crews were kept busy yesterday, Halloween, as another accident further down Kuhio Highway, at the intersection with Laukona Street in Hanama’ulu, resulted in injuries, including one potentially involving an infant.
Up in Kapa’a, again along Kuhio Highway near the intersection with Kawaihau Road, a fuel spill involving a truck and a drum of fuel snarled traffic as emergency crews, including a hazardous-materials-response unit from KFD, arrived on scene.
The road there was closed briefly, too.
Back in Lihu’e just before the afternoon rush hour, a two-vehicle accident on Rice Street fronting City Liquor resulted in injuries, too, clogging traffic briefly there.
