Selective reasoning
Mr. Christensen’s reply (GI 11/2/05) contains more examples of selective reasoning than anything I could possibly come up with, and also displays the typical arrogant ignorance of the scientific truths in the Bible, as well as a lack of understanding of the difference between the allegorical and the descriptive parts.
1. Before the invention of the electron microscope, atoms WERE invisible (and even now color must be added to see them). But have scientists been able to see what the electrons, protons, and neutrons of which the atoms themselves are made of? Has science been able to determine exactly what it is that keeps those elements in place, and not flying out in every direction, which the laws of physics say that they should? And can sound be seen? Then the passage quoted in part ( Heb. 11:3) is even more correct, especially when taken in its totality: “By faith we understand that the world was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was made out of things which do not appear.” This confirms the creative method of God as laid out in Gen. 1, and its sustainability is further confirmed in Col. 1:17.
2. Again, medical science can only add to what was the original scientific fact, and the AAP is incorrect. The rate of genital infections and disease are much higher among the uncircumcised, so the religious reasoning had its basis in a scientific fact.
3. I Deut. 32:11, Ruth 2: 12, Ps 17: 8, 36:11, 57:1, 61: 4, 63: 7, 91: 4, Matt. 23: 37/ Luke 13: 34 describe God as having “wings”. Are we to assume then that God is a giant eagle or chicken?
The Bible contains many passages that are pure allegory, and many more that modern science has proven to be scientifically accurate. If nothing else, Mr. Christensen’s response had demonstrated the accuracy of Jn 4:24, and 1st Cor. 2: 14.
