- Just 850 Kauaians were unemployed in October, according to statistics from officials at the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. There were 32,550 people in the civilian labor force, and 31,750 of them had jobs, for an unemployment rate of 2.6 percent. That marked the lowest unemployment rate in the state, along with Maui. The overall state unemployment rate last month was 2.7 percent, with Honolulu also coming in at 2.7 percent, and the Big Island at 3.1 percent. The U.S. unemployment rate last month was 4.6 percent. Kaua’i’s unemployment rate was 2.8 percent in September of this year, and 3.2 percent in October of 2004, according to state officials.
