Hatsume Shimamoto
Hatsume Shimamoto of Kapa’a died at Garden Isle Healthcare on Dec. 13, 2005, at the age of 89. Born in Kapa’a, on July 26, 1916, she was a homemaker.
She is survived by two daughters: Alice (Herbert) Toyooka of Honolulu and Charlene Boiser of Kapa’a; eight grandchildren: Russell (Pamela) Toyooka, Craig (Leslie) Toyooka, Guy Toyooka, Vandalea (Jiro) Fay, Maile (Lance Katekaru) Horikawa, Howard (Jeannie) Sakahara Jr., Waianela (Jerry) Refamonte, Caroline (Buddy) Victorino; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Sazuko Sakata; sister, Jeanette (George) Oishi; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral service officiated by Rev. Akiya will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 23, at the Kapaa Jodo Mission. Family members suggest casual attire, and asked that flowers be omitted.
Arrangements are being handled by professionals at Garden Island Mortuary, Ltd.
John Bandmann Sr.
John Wallis “Ka’a’a” Bandmann Sr. of Lawa’i died Dec. 13, 2005, at the age of 63. He was born in Lihu’e on June 17, 1942.
A master sergeant retired from the Hawaii Air National Guard after 26 years of service, he was also retired from Kauai Electric (now Kaua’i Island Utility Cooperative), where he was transmission and distribution baseyard supervisor.
He was also an avid and active member of Hui O Laka, the volunteer supporters of the Koke’e Natural History Museum in Koke’e State Park, of Hale O Na Ali’i, and Lihue Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife, Edith Leimomi Po’ai “Edee” Bandmann; three sons, John Wallis (Nani) Bandmann; Zahn Kawika Bandmann; and Keli’i Chris (fiancee Maila Gibson) Bandmann; two daughters: Kristine (Darrell) Borrero and Keu’ionalani Zahan; four grandchildren: Darrell Borrero Jr., Wailana Borrero, Kawika Bandmann and Taylor Bandmann; sisters in-law, Lalauna Bandmann, of Utah, and Valerie Po’ai of Kapa’a; brothers in-law, Mitchell Alapa, Kenwood Alapa and David Kaneali’i; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at the Kauai Veterans Center on Kapule Highway in Lihu’e Wednesday, Dec. 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with service to follow. Lei of aloha will be welcomed by family members in lieu of flowers or wreaths.

Bernice Hanson
Bernice Hanson of Waimea died Dec. 13, 2005, at Kauai Care Center in Waimea at the age of 90. Born Oct. 23, 1915 in Honolulu, she was a homemaker.
She is survived by children: Michael (Doris) Hanson, Lydia Hanson and Eugenia (John) Diaz; sisters: Eugenia (Donald) Wong, Ginger Takasaki, Margaret Zarembski, Elizabeth Zierhut and Eleanor Zane; five grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 20, at Diamond Head Cemetery on O’ahu at 2:15 p.m. Family members suggest casual attire. Arrangements are being handled by professionals at Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
William Kaeo Sr.
William “Kalani” L. Kaeo Sr., of Waimanalo, O’ahu, died Dec. 6, 2005, at the Castle Medical Center in Kailua. Born in Honolulu and formerly of Kapa’a, he was a security guard, former City & County of Honolulu refuse employee, and former Kauai Community Correctional Center prison guard.
He is survived by his wife, Michele Kaeo; three sons: William “Kalani Boy” Kaeo Jr., Tracy Cummings of Kapa’a, and Jonathan Kaeo; four daughters: Sheraine “Hano” Lono, Sharmaine “Pua” Lono and Michele “Honey Girl” Lono and Shampayne “Bebe” Kaeo; four grandchildren; one brother, Ernest (Violet) Kaeo; one sister, Victoria Valente of Hilo; and many hanai children.
On O’ahu, visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 23, at Nuuanu Memorial Park & Mortuary, with service at 10:30 a.m., and cremation to follow. Family members suggest casual attire. Arrangements are being handled by professionals at Nuuanu Memorial Park & Mortuary.
Janet Ellen Medeiros
Janet Ellen Medeiros died on Dec. 1, 2005, in Wheatridge, Colo. Born on Feb. 17, 1940, she worked for many years at Bank of Hawaii, Best Fruits, and Jimmy’s Grill.
She is survived by two daughters: Ranae (Edward) Vicoy of Kapa’a, and Julie (Darren) Nygaard of Colorado; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Services were held in Colorado, where she was cremated. Kaua’i services will be announced at a later date when her ashes are brought home by one of her daughter.
Michael Basilio
Michael Pablo Basilio of ‘Ele’ele died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Dec. 11, 2005, at the age of 22. Born in Waimea on July 26, 1983, he was a front-desk clerk with Suite Paradise.
Preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Alejandra Basilio, he is survived by his parents, Romualdo “Rhomy” and Marcelina “Cely” Basilio; sister, Rhocel Basilio; maternal grandparents, Vicente and Eufemia Pablo; paternal grand-father, Eulalio Basilio; numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 30, at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, where a wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 31. Visitation with the family will be from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, with mass at 10:30 a.m., followed by cremation. Family members suggest casual attire.
