Shirley Batey
Shirley Jean (Wittern) Batey died peacefully at her home Dec. 23, 2005. Born in Estherville, IA., on March 20, 1924, to Cecil Mapes and Ordell Wittern, she graduated from Algona High School in 1942, then moved to Washington D.C. in 1942 where she met her husband Thomas O. Batey and they were married Dec. 3, 1943. She accompanied her husband on many assignments during his 34 years of military service to such places as Newfoundland, Okinawa, Japan and many bases in the continental U.S.
She worked for the Federal Civil Service for 37 years retiring as a Resource Management Supervisor in May 1997. She lived in Hawai’i since 1969.
She is survived by her husband Thomas O. Batey of Koloa; sons Thomas O. (Faye) Batey Jr. of England; Kevin J. (Lani) Batey of Kailua; two granddaughters, Heather Lea (Batey) Harrison from Vandenberg AFB, Calif, and Malia Nicole Batey of Kailua; and two great granddaughters, Baylea Danielle Harrison and Kynzie Taylor Harrison from Vandenberg AFB, Calif; brother Jack (Betty) Wittern of Milford, IA.
A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held at the Borthwick Kauai Mortuary in Koloa on Dec. 30. Visitation will be at 5 p.m. and services at 6:30 p.m.
The family requests casual attire and that flowers be omitted. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Kauai Alzheimer’s Association, American Cancer Society of Kauai or Kauai Hospice in her memory is requested. Interment will be at Punchbowl National Cemetery.

Jonathon D’Attilio
Jonathan D’Attilio died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Dec. 27, 2005, at the age of 20.
Born on May 24, 1985, in New Jersey he was a resident of Sandpoint, Idaho.
He was a certified aircraft mechanic and airplane/helicopter pilot and the president of Inter-Island Helicopters on Kaua’i.
A graduate of Spokane Community College, he was an avid outdoorsman. His favorite things to do were fly fishing, longrange shooting, duck hunting, bow-hunting for deer and elk. Preceded in death by his mother, Ann Marie D’Attilio, he is survived by his father, Ken D’Attilio, four brothers: Joel D’Attilio, Jeremiah D’Attilio, Joseph D’Atillio, and Justin D’Attilio. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Dec. 30, at the Koloa Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses at 6 p.m. and fellowship to follow at the Koloa Neighborhood Center.
