Po’okela Volleyball Club meeting serves up reminders

Po’okela Volleyball Club will be holding tryouts starting Thursday Jan. 5 at Lihu’e Christian Church. The 12 and under age group will run from 5:15 -7 p.m. and the 14 and under age group will go from 7:15-9 p.m. There will be five sessions of camp/tryouts for the 12s and 14s. The dates for the other four sessions will be given out on Jan. 5. Wear a shirt with a number, bring a water bottle and wear knee pads if you have them. Parents who did not attend the info meeting in December will be required to sign waivers for athlete participation and receive information regarding the program. The cost for all five sessions will be $20 and players will learn basic fundamentals. The club is a member of USA Junior Volleyball – Aloha Region. The camp/try-outs will be ran by a former Olympic Setter, former college coaches and players, local high school coaches, former high school players home for Christmas break, current high school players and other enthusiastic volleyball volunteers.
Lihu’e Pop Warner accepting applications
The Lihu’e Pop Warner Association is now accepting applications for Tackle and Cheer Head Coach positions for the 2006 Pop Warner season. Anyone interested in applying for a head coach position in the Jr. Pee Wee, Pee Wee and Midget Divisions should contact Association President Gracie Grace at 635-5517. Deadline for turning in applications is January 30.
Jr. girls volleyball tryouts
For the first time for the neighbor islands, the National USA Volleyball Association will be conducting Junior Girls High Performance tryouts on the Big Island. Sponsored by the Moku O Keawe Region, it was announced by Elroy Osorio, Regional Commissioner for USA Volleyball.
The tryouts will take place on Saturday, March 4, 2006, at the Kea’au High School Gymnasium, (just outside of Hilo) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
First of all, an important informational meeting will be held on Saturday, January 7 at the University of Hawai’i’s Hilo Campus Center, Room #306, above the cafeteria, starting at 10 a.m. and ending at 12:30 p.m.
The tryouts in March, will be for the selection of Girls for the (1) Women’s Junior National Team (girls born in 1998 or 1989), (2) Girl’s Youth National Team (girls born in 1990 or 1991), and (3) Girl’s USA Select (Born in 1992, 1993 or later).

Quakers outlast Hawai’i, 58-55
HONOLULU — Ibrahim Jaaber scored 24 points to lead Penn to a 58-55 victory over Hawai’i Thursday night in the firstever meeting between the two teams. Mark Zoller added 13 points and Eric Odmundson 11 for the Quakers (4-4).
Deonte Tatum led Hawai’i with a career-high 17 points. Matt Lojeski added 13 points and Matthew Gipson 12 for the Rainbow Warriors (6-4).
Hawai’i pulled to within one point five times in the game, but the Quakers would not relinquish the lead. Penn, playing in its first game in 16 days, led at halftime 28-27.
