Pedro Sapinoso
Pedro Sapinoso of Kaumakani died Dec. 23, 2005, at Hale Kupuna, at the age of 83. Born Dec. 1, 1922, in the Philippines, he was a drip irrigator. He is survived by his wife: Leonora Sapinoso of Kaumakani; one son, Peter (Kathleen) Sapinoso of Puhi; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and granddaughters Mikialapua (Gerald) and Kasey; and great-grandchildren Kekoa Jr., Kaimani and Kalaikea. Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31 at Eleele Sacred Hearts Church where Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. by Father Nap. Burial to follow at Hanapepe Filipino Cemetery.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Gumercindo Rodrigues
Gumercindo “Cindo” Rodrigues was born July 30, 1909, at Hale Haka in Lihu’e and died on Dec. 12, 2005, in Hayward, Calif. He worked full time for the sugar plantation in Lihu’e from age 13 until he moved to Hayward in 1925 at age 16. In California he worked at Mare Island Shipyard, Holly Sugar Company, St. Regis Paper Company, and Swift Fertilizer Company. He enjoyed bowling, gardening
— in particular planting taro in the backyard — tending his koi pond, curing olives, and made countless audiotapes recounting his childhood life on Kaua’i. His favorite times were spent with friends and his extended family. He was the last surviving member of 11 siblings, all born in Hale Haka on Kaua’i. Cindo always called Kaua’i the island of love, and loved to tell stories such as George Wilcox giving him a ride to school in one of the first cars on Kaua’i, about his brothers working on construction of the Nawiliwili breakwater, and about daily life in the plantation camps.
His parents came to Kauai from Puerto Rico in 1899 and his father was an irrigation specialist for the plantation.
He is survived by Ida, his loving wife of 46 years; sons Paul, Jacobson, James, and Kenny, and daughter Kathy, all of Hayward; grandchildren, “Sista’ SHE” of Kauai, and Terri, Cindy, Melvin, Debbie. Ernie Jr., Melissa, Jessica, and Jillian of California; and many greatgrandchildren and great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his children Sarah, Junie and Shirley.
Services were held at Sorensen Brothers Mortuary in Hayward Dec. 14.
Milwaude Ululani Harvest
Milwaude Ululani Harvest of Honolulu, died at Kaiser Hospital on Dec. 21, 2005, at the age of 45. Born March 29, 1960, in Honolulu, she was a graduate of Kamehaneha Class of ’78 and a receptionist for Sen. Daniel K. Inouye for 15 years.
Preceded in death by her mother, Alta Lukela Harvest, she is survived by her father, Solomon Harvest of Honolulu; sisters, Solnette Loo of Mountain View; Solette (Darryl) Perry of Mililani, Zelka (Jamie) Harvest-Silva of Honolulu and Anelalani Patterson of Kapa’a. Visitation will be at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30 at Borthwick Mortuary on O’ahu, where service will be at 7 p.m. and again on Saturday, Dec. 31 from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Burial to follow at Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery at 11 a.m. Aloha attire is suggested.
Shirley Batey
Shirley Jean (Wittern) Batey died peacefully at her home Dec. 23, 2005. Born in Estherville, Ind., on March 20, 1924, to Cecil Mapes and Ordell Wittern, she graduated from Algona High Schol in 1942, then moved to Washington, D.C., in 1942 where she met her husband Thomas O. Batey and they were married Dec. 3, 1943. She accompanied her husband on many assignments during his 34 years of military service to such places as Newfoundland, Okinawa, Japan and many bases in the continental U.S. She worked for the Federal Civil Service for 3 years retiring as a Resource Management Supervisor in May 1997. She lived in Hawai’i since 1969.
She is survived by her husband Thomas O. Batey of Koloa; sons Thomas O. (Faye) Batey Jr. of England; Kevin J. (Lani) Batey of Kailua; two granddaugters, Heather Lea (Batey) Harrison of Vandenberg AFB, Calif, and Malia Nicole Batey of Kailua; and two great granddaughters, Baylea Danielle Harrison and Kynzie Taylor Harrison from Vandenberg AFB, Calif; brother Jack (Betty) Wittern of Milford, Ind.
A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held at the Borthwick Kauai Mortuary in Koloa on Dec. 30. Visitation will be at 5 p.m. and services at 6:30 p.m. The family requests casual attire and that flowers be omitted. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Kauai Alzheimer’s Association, American Cancer Society of Kauai or Kauai Hospice in her memory is requested.
Interment will be at Punchbowl National Cemetery.

Bernaldo Ancheta
Bernaldo Ancheta of Kekaha, died Dec. 22, 2005, at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital at the age of 77. Born Dec. 22, 1928, he was a mechanic for Kekaha Plantation. He is survived by his wife: Orencia

Brende Ancheta, Kim (Curt Cummings, Robert Rocky Ancheta; two sisers: Veronica Tolentino and Consuelo Yamane; 34 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Family and friends may call on Saturday, Dec. 31, at St. Theresa’s Church in Kekaha from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. where services will be celebrated at 10 a.m by Father Larry. Burial to follow at Kekaha Public Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.

Michael Pablo Basilio of ‘Ele’ele, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Dec. 11, 2005, at the age of 22. Born in Waimea, on July 26, 1983, he was a front desk clerk with Suite Paradise. Preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Alejandra Basilio, he is survived by his parents, Romualdo “Rhomy” and Marcelina “Cely” Basilio; sister Rhocel Basilio; maternal grandparents, Vicente & Eufemia Pablo; paternal grandfather, Eulalio Basilio; numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may visit with the family from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 30, at the Holy Cross Catholic Church; wake service at 7 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 31. Visitation with the family from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the Holy Cross Catholic Church; Mass at 10:30 a.m. Followed by cremation.
