Members of Na Kulu Kauai Deaf Club have their Christmas party planned at the Kauai Beach Hotel & Resort (the former Radisson Kauai Beach Resort) off Kuhio Highway near Hanama’ulu tomorrow, Sunday, Dec. 18.
It will be more than an occasion for folks to celebrate holiday cheer and merriment, organizers said.
The event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. will enable parents of children with hearing impairments to come together and talk about how they can help their children, and to begin to learn sign language, according to Angenette M. “Angie” Molina, a 1983-1984 Miss Deaf Kauai, and an organizer of the party.
Members of the group, formed in 1985 and currently with 28 people, have been trying to help folks on Kaua’i with hearing disabilities since 1979, an effort buoyed by Robert Frank, Molina said.
Proponents of the holiday event want to encourage more deaf children and their parents to attend the party, to gather in fellowship, show support for one another, and share common concerns.
“I want them to learn to communicate and learn (the) American Sign Language and to socialize with deaf people on Kaua’i,” Molina said in an e-mail to The Garden Island.
Molina will begin teaching that form of sign language beginning Wednesday, Jan. 25.
Molina said she wants those who attend the party to “know we welcome anyone,” and to feel comfortable about making new friends.
Folks with hearing impairments will be chatting in American Sign Language at the party, Molina said.
As part of the entertainment for the party, Molina will perform the hula. Santa Claus also will pay a visit.
The admission fee, which includes a buffet, is $40 for members, and $45 for non-members.
