WAIMEA — 12 seemed to be the number of choice for the Waimea softball team on Saturday.
The Menehune trampled Kapa’a, 12-3 and 12-2 in double-header action at Waimea Canyon Park to clinch at least a tie for the first round KIF title.
In the first contest, Waimea scattered 11 hits on 12 runs, while committing five errors. At the plate, Cassie Koerte (grand slam, single), Chasen Sherman (single), Moani Durant (two hits), Shana Tafiti (one hit), Kanani Mata (one hit), Kelsie Igne (HR), Kanoe Carveiro (HR), and Lani Kanahele (one hit) led the way for the Menehune. Stephanie Kawamura accounted for the lone Kapa’a hit.
Waimea scored 12 runs on 10 hits and committed five errors, as Kapa’a scored only two runs on three hits, while carding four errors.
Sherman (2-4), Durant (one hit), Tafiti (2-run HR, single, double), Koerte (double), Igne (two hits), Carveiro (one hit), and Mata (one hit) led the way for the Menehune at the plate. Koerte picked up the win on the mound for Waimea.
Cassie Mundon (one hit), Amber Pigao (one hit), and Loke Manaku (one hit) paced the Warriors’ offense.
KIF softball moves to Kapa’a Ballpark on Wednesday, with the Warriors battling the Red Raiders, starting at 5:30 p.m.
