It was the biggest showdown of the season and Kaua’i freshman ace Wailana “Bang Bang” Borrero didn’t forget to bring her big bazooka, her right arm.
Borrero stymied Waimea (4-2) hitters in the doubleheader sweep yesterday at Isenberg Field, with wins of 7-1 and 9-3.
In the first contest, Borrero, who suffered a loss against Waimea earlier in the season, came back strong and struck out four batters and allowed only one hit in the complete game victory.
Borrero also pitched Kaua’i (5-1) to the second game win, which helped the ladies in red clinch the first round KIF title. She fanned three hitters in yet another complete game win.
But the defending KIF champions also brought their big bats to the plate, with seven hits in the first game and 14 hits in the second contest.
Ku’ulei Manintin was the star in the opening game by cracking an inside-the-park home run on her way to a 2-4 showing.
Manintin was followed up by Jessica Iwata (1-4, 2B, 2 RBI’s), Randi Oketani (1-2, 1 RBI, 2 runs), Sam Koga (1-3, 1 run), Amanda Mayer (1-3, RBI, 1 run), Robin Jose (1-2, RBI, 1 run), and Borrero (1 run).
Waimea’s Cassie Koerte picked up the loss, but accounted for the lone Menehune hit and RBI.
Borrero was perfect at the plate in the second game (3-3, 3 runs) and near-perfect on the mound as well.
The Red Raiders 0 on four Menehune errors and timely hitting for the title clinching second game victory.
At the plate, Kaua’i was paced by Iwata (2-4, 2B, 2 runs), Darcie Allianic (1-3, 2B, 1 run), Manintin (2-4), Oketani (1-4, 1 run), Koga (2-4, 2 runs), Mayer (1-3), and Jose (2-4).
Waimea’s big gun, Shana Tafiti, managed to find her swing in the final contest of the first round, with two hits and three RBI’s. Lani Kanahele (2-3) and Moani Durant (2-4, 1 run) chipped in at the plate. Koerte was tabbed with the loss on the mound.
