Former Waimea High School standout athlete Virginia Aguilar earned American Southwest Conference (ASC) Player of the Year honors for the Hardin-Simmons (Texas) volleyball squad.
The Kalaheo resident just finished her junior season as a middle blocker for the Cowgirls, who tallied a 19-11 record and grabbed their first ASC West Division title.
Aguilar also took home first-team all-conference honors.
In addition to her honors on the court, Aguilar was also named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA College Division Academic All-American First Team in voting by CoSIDA members around the nation.
She has a 4.0 GPA in computer science and also earned All-Academic district honors as well.
“Virginia is the type of student-athlete we want all of our kids to be,” HSU head coach Hugh Hernesman said.
She works hard in the classroom and then when it is time for practice or weights or a game, she is the hardest worker we have on the court. She totally exemplifies what you look for in a student-athlete.”
Aguilar is one of four first-team Academic All-America selections with 4.00 GPAs on the seven-member first team.
Virginia is the daughter of Victor and Priscilla Aguilar and has two brothers, Chris and Kevin, and two sisters, Kristen and Kimberly.
