Patricia (Patty) Canastro
Patricia (Patty) Ellen Canastro of Kapa’a died at Wilcox Hospital on Nov. 22, 2005 at the age of 67.
She was born on July 8, 1938, in Pasadena, Calif. She is survived by her husband, Oliver Canastro of Kapa’a, two daughters; Lorri (George) Stilwell-Makaneole of Kapa’a, Linda (Scott) Imai of Kailua, O’ahu, mother, Edna Mason of Lihu’e, brother, Thomas Nollar of Kalaheo, six grandchildren; Alicia (Matt) Jones, Justine Michioka, Sarah Agudong, Makana Makaneole, Sean Imai, Lauren Imai, numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life will be held on Jan. 15, at the Kilohana Carriage House from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Cremation was handled by Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.
Myra Meatoga
Myra Hokulani Meatoga died Nov. 27, 2005, at the age of 76.
Born Aug. 5, 1929, she was also known as “Sandii Hall” or “Aunty Hoku.”
She is survived by her children: Bruce M. Meatoga, Debra H. Meatoga, Brian V. Meatoga, Winifred Asing (hanai); sisters: Mary “Honey” Bowman, Cecelia Martin Harbottle; brother: Theodore E.M. Osorio; numerous nieces and nephews.
Church services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Nuuanu Ward, 622 N. Judd St. on O’ahu on Saturday, Dec. 10, wih viewing from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and services from 11 a.m. to noon.
A beach memorial will be held on Kaiser Beach on O’ahu on Wednesday, Dec. 14, at 10 a.m.
Scattering of ashes will follow a beach memorial at Lihi in Kapa’a on Saturday, Dec. 17, from 9 a.m. to noon. For more information, call 635-0019.
Saburo Itakura
Saburo Itakura of Kalaheo died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Dec. 5, 2005, at the age of 81.
Born in Makaweli on May 26, 1924, he was a retired building inspector with the County of Kauai, also a WWII Veteran member of 442nd Regimental Combat Team Company I.
He is survived by his wife, Hitoe; son, Miles E. Itakura of Honolulu; one grandchild; brother, Haruo Itakura of Los Angeles; three sisters, Betty M. Itakura of Waimea; Marilyn Miyasaki of Honolulu and Fumiko Lopez of Honolulu; numerous uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services were private. Family request no Kodan.
Arrangements were handled by Garden Island Mortuary, Ltd.
Charles Tamura
Charles Satoru Tamura of Kapa’a, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Dec. 12, 2005, at the age of 73.
Born in Kilauea on April 12, 1932, he was a retired manager with Meadow Gold Dairies.
Preceded in death by son, Reid, he is survived by his wife, Elaine; two sons, Chris (Doreen) Tamura of Kapa’a and Rand (Lisa) Tamura of Honolulu; daughter, Faith (Curtis) Shiramizu of Kapa’a; daughter-in-law, Michele Tamura of Kapa’a; eight grandchildren, Daurice (Clifton) Arruda, Teresa (Brent Amoy) Tamura, Cy Tamura, Sean Tamura, Robin Lore, Le’a Tamura, Alexis Tamura and Ty Shiramizu; one great-grandson, Akoni John “AJ” Arruda; two brothers, Nobuyoshi (Eleanor) Tamura of Puhi and Tatsuo (Itsuko) Tamura of Kilauea; four sisters, Michie Yonekura of Honolulu, Masayo Yoshihara of Kapa’a, Miyako (Shoichi) Takenaka of Kapa’a and Chieko Ota of Kapa’a; numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family at 10 a.m., Dec. 17, at the Kapa’a All Saints Church; service officiated by Rev. Mary Koppel will begin at 11 a.m. Casual attire is suggested.

Leona Johnson
Leona Marie Johnson, died on Nov. 26, 2005, at the age of 68.
Born and raised on Mercer Island, Wash., she lived many years in Washington and Alaska before moving to Kaua’i in 1984 with her husband, Donald Johnson. They were frequent visitors to the Coco Palms and later built a house and made Kaua’i their home.
She spread her aloha to many through her work with cancer patients to provide wigs and haircuts for the home-bound.
She is survived by one daughter: Kathy Astrahantseff from Essen, Germany and one halfbrother: Gordon Grant from Mercer Island, Wash. and her hanai family, Charmaine Archer. family and friends on Kaua’i.
All are welcome to remember her together at the Kapa’a Missionary Church on Saturday, Dec. 17. Visitation is at 9 a.m. and service at 9:30 a.m.
Melbourn Kelly Moore
Melbourn Kelly Moore of Princeville, died on Dec. 9, 2005, at the age of 87. He passed away quiely at home, surrounded by family members. Mel was born on Nov. 23, 1918, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He served in the Army from 1936-1946, starting out by riding horses in the Cavalry, and later serving in the infantry in the European and Pacific theaters during WWII. After the war, he and his young family settled in Southern California where he worked as a banker. After retiring as a bank vice-president, Mel and his wife, Mary Jane, retired to Kaua’i in 1980, where he was a founding member of the Church of the Pacific in Princeville (A UCC church), and a member of the Princeville Men’s Golf Club. (Until recently, Mel played about 300 rounds of golf a year.)
Mel leaves his wife of 65 years, Mary Jane Moore, and his children Richard Moore of Wexford, Ireland, Sally Moore (Ralph) Rubio and David (Carolyn) Moore, both from the North Shore; seven grand-children and two great-grandsons.
On Wednesday, Dec. 28, at 1:30 p.m., there will be a memorial service at the Church of the Pacific, Prnceville. Casual attire is suggested and the family requests that flowers be omitted. Gifts of remembrance can be made to the International

Norma Jean Montero
Norma Montero of Lihu’e, died Nov. 30, 2005, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 55.
Born Jan. 12, 1950, in the Philippines, she was a dishwasher for Waipouli Restaurant.
She is survived by her husband: Antony Montero; one son: Lito (Edna) Montero; two daughters: Yolanda (Robinson) Cabebe and Lorna Montero; mother: Maria Garcia; five sisters: Nelly Camerillo, Nelda Fernandez, Lourdes Garcia, Nely (Edwin) Pascua, Caridad Garcia; two brothers: Narceso (Marieta) Garcia and Edwin (Edna) Garcia; nine grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call on Friday, Dec. 16, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel in Koloa from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and again on Saturday, Dec. 17, at Immaculate Conception Church from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. where Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Lihue Cemetery.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
