Who’s got ice water in their veins?

To say a lot is on the line in the KIF soccer finale today is an understatement.

If the Red Raider girls’ soccer squad is able to defeat Waimea this afternoon (3:30 p.m.) at Hanapepe Stadium, it will force a one game play-off on Monday for the KIF championship.

In the meantime, the Kaua’i boys, who are out of the hunt for a state berth, can play spoiler against Waimea.

If the Red Raiders beat the Menehune, then the Warriors will be named KIF champions for 2006.

However, Waimea controls its own destiny, thanks to a tie against Kapa’a on Wednesday.

A win this afternoon by the Menehune would give them a second straight KIF title. A tie with Kaua’i would force a one-game playoff on Monday between Kapa’a and Waimea.

So it’s crunch time in the KIF soccer regular season finale. A lot is at stake for both the Red Raider and Warrior girls’ teams and for both the Waimea and Kapa’a boys’ squads.

The Menehune girls have played tough this season and improved tenfold from last year under second-year head coach Jen Norton. In their last contest, Waimea held Kapa’a off of the scoreboard for the entire first half.

For the Red Raider boys, a season of heartbreak could be somewhat salvaged with a second straight win over the Menehune, who fell to Kaua’i 3-2 in their last matchup.

However, due to the use of an ineligible player, the Red Raiders forfeited the win, which eliminated them from any postseason play.

KIF soccer action begins at 10:30 a.m., with JV action to follow. Varsity play starts around 1:30 p.m. (boys) and the girls hit the grass at 3:30 p.m.
