KIF sports aren’t the only things filling up the Saturday sports schedule on Kaua’i, but almost every sport, from swimming to soccer, will take center stage today around the island.
Starting things off is the annual Jimmy Yagi Basketball Clinic at Kaua’i High School’s gym, starting at 8:30 a.m.
The Hall of Fame coach, along with top instructors from all over the state are back for another helpful and healthy session of basketball schooling.
The clinic is open to boys and girls ages 17-and-under. Players in the 14-and-under age group are invited to take part in the clinic that runs from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., with free lunch to follow.
The 17-and-unders will hoop it up in a session that goes from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. A special coaches clinic will follow from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event is free and part of the county’s Drug Free Program.
The Koloa Youth Baseball Association is having its annual parade to open its 2006 T-ball season.
The parade will begin at the First Hawaiian Bank in Koloa and end at Koloa Ballpark. The event is scheduled to commence at 9 a.m. KIF swimming gets under-way in a fun-type of meet hosted by Island School.
All athletes, except Kapa’a High School swimmers, who are on O’ahu, should be participating in the event at Kaua’i High School’s pool, starting at 10 a.m.
And the water sports continue from Hule’ia to Wailua River, as the KIF canoe paddling season starts up with a long distance race, starting at 10 a.m.
KIF soccer kicks its way to Hanapepe Stadium, with Kaua’i battling Waimea, beginning at 10:30 a.m. with the JV contests.
KIF softball springs into action at Kapa’a Ballpark, in a double-header between Waimea and Kapa’a, starting at 10 a.m.
And if you still haven’t seen as much sports as you’d like to, then take a trip out to the westside for the YMCA of Kaua’i Hoe Wa’a OC-1 paddling season opener.
The contest begins at 12 p.m., from Kuku’iula Small Boat Harbor to Port Allen for the short course race and from the Sheraton Resort to Port Allen for the long course event. Contact the race hotline at 635-0388 for more information.
