LIHU’E — For the second time in as many weeks, the Makaweli Indians came from behind to finish in a stalemate against their opponents. On Sunday, the Indians finished with 7-7 tie against Kalaheo.
Leighton Otoman came through with a critical two-RBI triple in the seventh inning to pull the Indians to within two points of Kalaheo, 6-4.
Otoman’s only hit of the day scored Jason Nakata and Royce Ijima to pull Makaweli within striking distance of the Kaneshiro Farmers.
Earlier in the inning, Scott Shimabukuro scored on Nakata’s (3-5) RBI single.
But, Kalaheo answered back in the bottom of the frame as Keola McCallum scored on a wild pitch for the 7-4 bulge.
Makaweli battled back in the eighth frame with three more runs as Scott Shimabukuro was safe at third on an errant Kalaheo throw, Shimabukuro and Travis Shigeta scoring on a two-RBI Nakata single to tie the contest.
Kalaheo still had a chance to advance as Keola McCallum got on base, but was left on base as the third out came on a strikeout stranding the go-ahead run at third.
Kalaheo established themselves with a six-run fourth inning as Kainoa Santos led the Kalaheo bats in the outing with a three-RBI triple to rightfield.
Santos crossed the plate on Brandon Ishibashi’s RBI single, and Ishibashi scored on an RBI single by Kaina Mc-Callum.
Makaweli outhit Kalaheo 12-8, getting all dozen hits off Kalaheo starter Liko Pereira who finished with five strike-outs and three walks before being relieved by Kaina Mc-Callum.
Cody Dotario combined with Jason Nakata to keep Kalaheo contained, Dotario giving up four hits with nine walks, before being relieved by Nakata who pitched five and a third innings giving up three hits, striking out six, and walking just one batter.
Nakata was also the force in the box with three RBI on three singles. Otoman followed with a pair of RBI, and Michael Shimatsu and Shigeta rounded out the leaders with an RBI apiece. Ikaika Pezario finished with a double and a single.
Kalaheo got three RBI from Santos, and a run apiece from Ishibashi and Kaina McCallum. David Bukoski pounded out a double.
Lihu’e 9, Hanapepe 7
Mikey Cardinez finished with three RBI on a homerun and a single to lead Lihu’e to a 9-7 showing over the Hanapepe Rivermen in the finale.
Cardinez combined with Allan Mundon to hold Hanapepe to just 11 hits in the win, Cardinez pitching five innings, giving up five hits, striking out three, and walking three.
Mundon struck out two, walked one in his five innings on the mound.
Wendall Nonaka started for Hanapepe, and in seven innings gave up five runs, 15 Lihu’e hits while striking out four, and walking no one. Russell Ijima came in relief for two innings with three hits allowed for three runs.
Stanton Yoshimori, Curtis Sadamitsu, and Ryden Domingsel joined Cardinez in the batters box with an RBI each, Sadamitsu going 3-5 with a triple. Yoshimori was 5-5 on the day. Dan Tanimoto finished with a pair of singles and a double.
Kevin Suga (2-2) had the power bat for the Rivermen with three RBI on a single and a triple.
Troy Yamase (1-4) drove in two RBI on a single, and Leroy Nonaka (1-2) had an RBI. Vince Nitta was 3-4, Wendall Nonaka finished 2-4 as did Brandon Hew. Brandon Hashimoto and Leroy Nonaka each singled.
Sunday’s games will see Lihu’e taking on Kalaheo at the 10 a.m. opener with Hanapepe going up against Makaweli at 1 p.m.
Games are at Vidinha Stadium with no admission.
