Kaua’i’s best golfers will get the shot to make the cut at the U.S. Open on their own home course at the Po’ipu Bay Golf Course.
This year, in addition to a local qualifying round, the sectional qualifier will also be held on the island.
On May 19, the Po’ipu Bay Golf Course will play host to the local qualifer and on June 5, all the pros will be heading down to Po’ipu once again for the sectional event.
The local qualifier events are four of approximately 100 expected 18-hole local qualifiers. Top players will advance to the 36-hole sectional.
At least one player from the sectional will be advancing directly to the U.S. Open Championship at the Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y., June 15-18.
Approximately 90 total spots will be awarded through roughly 12 sectional qualifier events to fill the championship field of 156 players. The championship format will be four rounds of stroke play.
Entries for the 2006 U.S. Open Championship must be received by the United States Golf Association by April 26. Applications will be available in March. To obtain an entry application, players can call the USGA at (908) 234-2300 or enter online at the USGA Web site at www.usga.org. The event is open to professionals and amateurs with a handicap index not exceeding 1.4.
The U.S. Open is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA.
