Waimea will travel to the Bernice Hundley Gym on the Kapa’a High School campus tonight to open the 2006 KIF boys basketball season.
JV games during the regular season will tip off starting at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity contests squaring off approximately 20 minutes after the end of the junior varsity games.
In the opener, Waimea — under head coach Elton Monetmayor — will be squaring off against the Kapa’a Warriors, who will debut under the coaching of Phil Baclayon and his staff.
Baclayon and the Warrior men were on hand to watch the other Kaua’i teams play against visiting Hilo High School last week.
Earlier, the Warriors were chasing a seven-point deficit at the half before succumbing to the tenacious Viking full-court press.
All three Kaua’i schools were victimized by the Vikings’ press, but at least one spectator is still expecting the season to be exciting. Waimea High School Athletic Director Jon Kobayashi, doing door attendant duties during the Menehune’s game against the Vikings, said he anticipates an exciting season with parity between all three schools.
In the Waimea effort against Hilo, Brendan McDaniels finished with a game-high 20 points against the Vikings with the potentially explosive guard Chad Barba adding 10 points.
Kapa’a’s contest saw Junnel Calpito and Nate Beralas each finish with 14 points, and their low post Mike Lindsey closing with 9 points.
For those who cannot make the games, or want some live play coverage while in the stands, KQNG Radio Am 570 will be broadcasting tonight’s contest live with Anahola Joel Pahukula.
