HANAPEPE — Oh how blue it is!
The 2006 KIF boys soccer title turned blue on Saturday, as the Menehune were crowned KIF champs for the second consecutive season.
But it wasn’t all beans and rice, as Waimea had to fight off tough challenges by both Kaua’i and Kapa’a.
The Red Raiders, who could’ve handed the Warriors the championship with a win over the Menehune on Saturday, fell victim to Waimea’s heavily experienced squad.
Chad “Mighty Mouse” Thompson and Scott Martin notched Waimea’s goals on Saturday in the 2-1 win over Kaua’i.
Mikiala Cup Choy scored the Red Raiders’ lone goal.
In the meantime, the girls’ standings are deadlocked after eight games, with Kaua’i and Kapa’a battling on Tuesday for the title.
The Red Raiders blanked the Menehune on Saturday, 7-0, thanks to scores from Tiffany Ikeda-Simao, Skye Shimabukuro (2), Allison Arakaki, Auika Muragin, Rachel Taira, and Megan Vento.
Waimea’s Melia Prinzing had a chance to score in her last high school contest, but Kaua’i goalie Tamalyn Hasegawa stopped the attempt.
The HHSAA Girls State Soccer tournament will be played on Maui, from Feb. 8-11.
Meanwhile, the boys tournament will kickoff the same time, but on O’ahu.
