A special presentation on the effects of crystal methamphetamine, or “ice,” will be given by attorney Rosa Flores from the county Office of the Prosecuting Attorney at the Kekaha-Mana Ka Leo O Kaua‘i meeting today at 6:30 p.m. at the Kekaha Neighborhood Center.
Flores has worked for the prosecutor’s office since November 2003. She is currently assigned to prosecute the growing number of methamphetamine cases, a press release states.
Prosecuting Attorney Craig De Costa will also be available to answer questions after Flores’ presentation.
De Costa said he is pleased that attorneys in his office can assist with community efforts to curb illegal drug use.
“In trying to control the methamphetamine problem on Kaua‘i, community involvement is critical,” he said.
“Our office applauds the efforts of residents who are willing to be more involved in their community to take on this fight. We stand ready to work closely with those residents, along with the police and other law-enforcement agencies.” According to county Community- Response Specialist Theresa Koki, members of the Kekaha community have been very proactive in fighting the war on drugs.
She pointed out that, with the support of county anti-drug coordinator Roy Nishida and Community-Outreach Specialist Beverley Pang, residents in the Westside community were the first on the island to implement Waele A Ola Hou, a Weed-and-Seed-like program.
In addition, Kekaha residents recently formed the Westside Neighborhood Association, and are encouraging other Westsiders to join them in their efforts to improve the quality of life in their community.
“Kekaha and Mana residents have certainly shown that they have energy and passion, which has brought out fresh ideas,” Koki said. “They want to be informed about ways to combat problems and build community.” For more information about Ka Leo O Kaua‘i, please call Koki at 241-6246.
