No smoking allowed at Lihu‘e Airport
State Department of Transportation Airports Division officials advised all airport passengers, employees and tenants of Lihu‘e Airport that smoking will be prohibited in the main central airport lobby and concourses, effective Tuesday, except in designated areas that will be opened later this year.
In a press release, a DOT-Airports spokesperson said smoking will only be allowed outside of the baggage-claim areas, and curbside of the terminal.
Airport officials requested that smokers utilize the airport ashtrays provided to extinguish cigarettes and cigars.
The policy change was made following public input and requests to ban smoking in that airport area, and are similar to no-smoking policies at other state airports.
Officials with the state DOT-Airports Division are designing an open-air, outdoor, patio area inside the secured portion of the terminal, in which smoking will be permitted.
They request cooperation from members of the smoking public until the facility is completed at the end of the year.
For more information on the new, no-smoking policy, call the airport, 246-1456.
