With just a few more games to go in the KIF soccer season, the Red Raider girls squad did two things yesterday to help themselves: kept Waimea out of the win column and — more importantly — kept pace with first-place Kapa’a (4-0).
Kaua’i cruised past the Menehune on Saturday, 5-0, thanks to a commanding 4-0 first half bulge.
Red Raider netminder K.C. Gaitos was a bulldog in the goal, while recording a shutout for her team.
Meanwhile, it was just a matter of time before Kaua’i brought up top JV goal scorer Skye Shimabukuro, who helped out the varsity team in an instant, scoring one of the five goals.
Allison Arakaki, Megan Vento, Rachel Taira, and Cherisse Rapozo also found the back of the goal for scores on Saturday afternoon.
The win improves Kaua’i’s record to 2-2 (6 points) and puts them in striking position, with a key matchup happening on Wednesday between the top two teams. The Warriors have accumulated 12 points so far this season.
Red Raiders sweep JV contests
Both the girls and boys Red Raider JV squads were successful on Saturday with convincing wins over the Menehune.
Gerry Rayray led the Kaua’i boys with two goals and Michael Fujikawa and Daren Catiggay-Bodano chipped in with a goal each for the 4-1 win.
Waimea’s Jayrald Watanabe added Waimea’s lone goal. The halftime score was identical to the final tally.
After a 1-1 tie at the half, the Red Raider girls punched in two more goals for the 3-1 win.
Melissa Iida notched a pair of goals for Kaua’i and Bryanna Prinzing scored her first goal of the season, which paid off big time.
Her father Bill, who is a KIF soccer official, mentioned that Bryanna earned $20 for her goal on Friday and said that if she scores two goals in one game, he’d give her $50, but he wouldn’t go as far as to say what she would get if she scored a hat trick. Bill, who also has a daughter (Melia) on Waimea’s varsity squad, opened the invitation to her as well, but so far, Melia hasn’t cashed in like her younger sister just yet.
Kiare Alejandro chipped in with Waimea’s only goal of the JV girls contest on Saturday.
KIF soccer continues on Wednesday in varsity-only matches between Kapa’a and Kaua’i, starting at 5 p.m.
