HANAPEPE – Kaua’i was as stingy as a stray cat last night in KIF soccer, with two shutout wins over the Menehune at Hanapepe Stadium.
The Red Raider boys started off the evening with a 4-0 drubbing of the Menehune, thanks to two goals each by Danny Riggle and Agu Garcia. Garcia’s first goal came via a penalty kick in the first half, after Nathan Martin’s handball penalty.
Garcia then notched his second score off of a pass from Riggle for the 2-0 lead, and Riggle slammed a goal in the net just before the end of the half for the 3-0 lead.
Riggle closed out the game with another score late in the final half for the 4-0 win. Kaua’i goalie Jeremy Victor was tough in the net and the Red Raider defense put a lid on Menehune star Chad Thompson, led by Charlie Kato and Ryan Nagaoka.
Despite the win, the Red Raiders pushed themselves out of contention by using an ineligible player in their last game against the Menehune. As a result, Kaua’i forfeited the contest and was eliminated from KIF title contention.
Idle Kapa’a is just one point ahead of the Menehune for first-place in the KIF boys’ race.
Meanwhile, the Red Raider girls still have a shot at the KIF championship, as they took it to Waimea with a 5-0 win.
Skye Shimabukuro scored two goals, one in the first half and one in the second stanza. Rachel Taira, Megan Vento, and Cherisse Rapozo netted Kaua’i’s other scores.
Red Raider goalie K.C. Gaitos recorded the shutout, with Auika Muragin, Ali Arakaki and Tasha Pigao providing great defensive performances.
The win inched Kaua’i closer to Kapa’a with a big game coming up on Saturday, pitting the two teams against each other.
Kapa’a has 15 points on the season and Kaua’i is right behind with 12 points.
