LIHU’E — A man accused of assaulting three Kaua’i Police Department officers, resisting arrest, abusing his ex-girlfriend and damaging her car pleaded not guilty to the alleged offenses.
Shaun Reis, 21, of Anahola, appeared before Circuit Court Judge Kathleen Watanabe last week to enter his pleas.
Watanabe scheduled a jury trial for Monday, April 17.
Reis is in custody although bail was reduced from $20,000 to $5,000.
Court records show that Reis was arrested Friday, Dec. 2, and that lawyers in the county Office of the Prosecuting Attorney filed a complaint against him in Circuit Court on Friday, Dec. 23.
According to the two-page complaint, the alleged offenses took place on Dec. 2.
Court records show that one of the officers involved in the incident leading up to the charges had called for backup because he knew that Reis had been violent with other officers.
Additionally, according to that officer’s police report about the incident, Reis had assaulted him in the past when he tried to arrest Reis for an outstanding bench warrant.
Court records show that the incident started when KPD officers were called to an Anahola address to look into what caused the damage to a black Dodge Neon. Responding officers talked to the car’s owner, who told the police that Reis would damage her car if she tried to leave him.
She told the police that Reis allegedly reversed his truck into her car three times, smashed the roof of the car, and punched out the passenger-door window.
According to court records, the woman also told police that Reis slashed all four tires on her car, and that he allegedly shoved her in the chest and punched her in the chest once with his right fist.
After talking to her, the officers found Reis in front of a nearby house. He was being held around the waist by his mother, who was pleading with him to cooperate with the officers, court records indicate.
Court records show Reis started to become agitated as officers approached him.
The officers told Reis that he was going to be arrested for damaging the car, and for assaulting his ex-girlfriend.
At one point, according to court records, Reis made a fist, and raised that fist as if he was going to punch his mother.
Court records show that Reis told the officers that he was going to kill himself if they tried to arrest him. He also told the officers that they should use their guns to shoot him, or he would take one of their guns and use it.
An officer moved in to arrest Reis, but he resisted by throwing punches and kicking his feet, court records show.
Pepper spray was used to prevent the officers from being punched and kicked. However, according to court records, Reis continued to resist for about a minute, until handcuffs and leg irons could be put on him.
According to court records, Reis’ eyes were washed out with water, and he was put in the back of a patrol car. While in the car, he began screaming, and banged his head against the partition that separates the driver from back-seat passengers.
Court records show that Reis was taken out of the car because he had a cut on his forehead from hitting his head up against the partition.
Medical personnel who were called to the scene administered first aid to Reis, and he was later taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital to be treated for injuries, according to court records.
Reis is charged with three counts of second-degree assault on a police officer, one count of resisting arrest, one count of abusing a household member, and one count of third-degree criminal property damage.
If convicted on all counts, Reis could be in jail for a maximum of six years, and have to pay up to $12,000 in fines.
