KALAHEO — Vakeesha Lagazo shot a game-high 11 points and Rosalleah Palma added 10 points as Kaupulono Girls outdistanced Ha’aheo, 43-16 at the county’s 12 and Under girls basketball game, Monday. Palma started the ball rolling with 4 of Kaupulono’s 6 first-period points, but Ha’aheo battled back as the little girls in pink pulled to within a pair behind baskets from Mia Cabulisan and Caitlyn Rapozo.
Lagazo picked up the pace in the second period, finishing with 6 of Kaupulono’s 8 points. Searra Kaohi notched the final Waimea bucket in their 8-0 frame.
Despite a 24-6 halftime deficit, Ha’aheo never faltered, their out-heighted players swarming over the Waimea shooters and pestering the baskets.
Caitlyn Rapozo used her body to lead Ha’aheo with 6 points, 4 coming in the fifth period when the soccer-girls-turned-basketballers reaped their best frame with a 6-11 showing against Kaupulono.
Mia Cabulisan who notched the final bucket in the fifth frame, joined Malu Vegas with 4-point contributions, Vegas getting all of her buckets in the sixth period for Ha’aheo. Michaela Rapozo rounded out the math for Ha’aheo with a pair in the effort, her bucket dropping in the third frame, but her efforts at trying to penetrate a taller Waimea defense going the distance.
Lagazo topped Kaupulono Girls’ scoring with 11 points, followed by the 10-point showing by Palma. Kaohi ended the night on an 8-point note with Cassandra Owens finishing with 6 markers. Makamae Compoc added a pair of buckets, and pairs from Taylor Delos Reyes and Brandee Victorino accounted for the final math. Aeron Inouye scored 8 points, and Brian Haz finished with 5 points as the Kaua’i Fire Raiders topped the Kalaheo Tigers, 27-23 in the first of three 12 and Under boys games played Saturday. DJ Alveres scored a game-high 10 points with Shawn Tavares adding 6 points in the Tigers’ efforts. Micah Dunhour lit up the boards for 20 points as Hanama’ulu soared over the Gee Unit B, 73-13 in the second game. Canaan Higa and Kahale Fagarang each added a dozen points to help Hanama’ulu.
Rajan Baliaris topped the Unit B effort with 7 points.
Bradley Heiser finished to 14 points to lead the Gee Unit A to a 35-23 win over the Westside Hornets in the finale. Dane Bautista added 7 points for Unit A.
Jake Corona led the Hornets’ effort with 8 points followed by Keoni Ana and Cliffton Callejo each chipping in 4 points.
