It’s said that turning a negative into a positive is the best way to get things going in the right direction, and for the creators of TheSpiritofSports.com, it’s exactly what they did.
“It all began on the dreadful day that Alexis Serna of my beloved Oregon State Beavers missed three extra points in an overtime loss at defending national champion LSU,” co-creator Richie Petersen wrote on their Web site.
After witnessing Richie’s explosion during the game, his roommate and co-creator, Earl Moore, pitched the idea of a sports radio show and Web site based in Po‘ipu.
“Our founder and motivation, Earl, had met me mere days earlier. Though he has no clue about sports, he saw some kind of potential in me. Seventeen months later we are on the brink of something great,” Richie wrote.
It all started on September of ‘04 and has turned into a fully loaded acoustic recording studio on the south shore, which will house their internet radio station. And they want to keep it local. As you log on to the Web site, you’ll see a rooster, which is widely referred to as “Kaua‘i’s Alarm Clock.” It’s also their logo.
“Talk shows, music, and sports will be featured. We’ll be giving away all kinds of trips, memorabilia, merchandise, whatever we can get our hands on. I especially look forward to interviews; anyone can stop by and have a sit-down wala‘au (talk story),” Richie wrote.
So far, TheSpiritofSports.com completed a recording with former Chicago Cubs pitcher Steve Trout and current Baltimore Orioles’ minor league hurler and former Kaua‘i High School standout, Tyler Yates. Log on to their Web site to hear the show.
A weekly blog is currently being set up on the Web site and should be in full effect, beginning in April. Currently, the two are giving residents and visitors a chance to win a week in Lake Tahoe.
You can join Richie and Earl in Tahoe for a week of parasailing, golf, cocktails, and dinner during the Tahoe Celebrity Golf Tournament, which runs from July 10-17.
E-mail TheSpiritofSports@yahoo.com to enter. Simply type “Lake Tahoe” in the subject line and cross your fingers.
Only one entry per person and the drawing will be held on June 1.
TheSpirtofSports.com, Scott Anderson, along with Nalu Underground magazine, are sponsoring a beachwide cleanup in Po‘ipu, which hits the sand in April. Check out their Web site for updated information or how you can get involved.
“We’re trying to make a difference, have a positive effect on this world we share. Many mahalos to all that have helped us to get this far. It’s only the beginning,” Richie said.
