Domi Alayvilla (we get to write about his ‘ohana all the time) was in the focus Saturday, as he was one of the finalists at the Big Save Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tournament. And so was Shanna Tafiti’s dad and grandpa, who said they were busy playing cards, so couldn’t make box lunches. Eric Sakazaki did his usual great job as master of ceremonies, and Dickie Chang is definitely a master at switching between the parking lot at Lihu‘e Big Save and the Waimea Town Celebration. Now, if that could be for real. Bruce Smalling was there, as were a lot of other people despite the hectic weekend schedule. Great job to Charles Kawakami and his entire Big Save ‘ohana on the event. Kurt Toma had to run from being a dealer to manning the flying-saucers in booth Waimea. Congratulations to Cyndi Desamparado on being the big winner! David Bukoski was raring to go, but he was like Domi. OK, so how many fire people did we have? Oscar Portugal and Dr. Ramon de la Pena were taking in the action while waiting for Dickie to talk about their Philippines’ dance troupe that will open at the Kaua‘i Community College Performing Arts Center on Sunday (don’t forget the East Kauai Lions Club pancake breakfast first). And, from Dickie Chang to JK and Michael Alonzo, who were taping the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation Cheer Championships. Was nice to see Ralph Suniga, who is back from his conferences, and Joe and Tina Brun, who made it to the event after Joe’s softball team won Saturday morning. “Coach” Penny Vess was juggling between video and stills, and Clesson Lee and Tamalyn Hasegawa were great on the mikes!
