Gov. Linda Lingle recently released $39,320,000 for school improvements at 232 schools across the state, including over $1.5 million for Kaua‘i schools.
“Investing these funds is part of our ongoing commitment to promote education in Hawai‘i and put more money into the schools,” Lingle said in a press release.
“We want to provide our students with comfortable and safe learning environments along with improved services and resources so that they can focus on succeeding in school.” State Department of Education officials have set aside $182,000 for repair and maintenance of their annex buildings, and $610,000 in works of art funds for the State Foundation of Culture and the Arts.
The project scope includes such improvements as re-roofing, air conditioning, painting, plumbing, and electrical upgrades.
These repair-and-maintenance projects are priority 3 of 30 as reflected on the state Department of Education’s revised implementation plan, from November.
Funds for priorities 1, 2, and 4 have already been approved and released by Lingle.
Some $1,523,000 in funds was released for repairs and maintenance at Kaua‘i schools, including the following: Eleele School: replace grease trap, $24,000; replace fire alarm system, $303,000; Hanalei School: install ceiling in portable unit, $32,000; electrical feed upgrade, $1,000; replace rain gutters, $70,000; Kalaheo School: extend roof, $8,000; Kamakahelei Middle School: courtyard improvements, $5,000; Kapa‘a Elementary: install six-foot, chain-link fence, $33,000; drainage improvements, $9,000; Kapa‘a High: replace waterline and fire hydrant, $71,000; replace athletic field fence, $7,000; Kapa‘a Middle: install exit signs, $84,000; Kaua‘i High: replace filter tank, $20,000; electrical work, $5,000; replace light fixtures, $45,000; re-roof buildings, $214,000; King Kaumuali‘i Elementary: replace fire doors, $72,000; Kekaha School: add circuits, $10,000; Kilauea School: interior renovations, $9,000; Koloa School: replace grease trap, $24,000; replace double entry doors, $13,000; install security screens, $6,000; replace urinals, $16,000; Waimea Canyon: install ceiling fans, $119,000; Waimea High: replace fire line, $75,000; replace floor tile, $41,000; produce room improvements, $15,000; Wilcox Elementary: fence at electrical box, $5,000; replace toilet partitions, $128,000; re-roof building, $59,000.
