After trouncing the 4-time defending state champion Mililani Trojans last year in the state quarterfinals and finishing up as the top public school squad in Hawai’i, you’d think the Waimea (4-2-2) boys soccer team would get some R-E-S-P-E-C-T in this year’s tournament — not so fast!
And it’s not like the Menehune roster was gutted since last season, with key players Chad “Mighty Mouse” Thompson, Kollin Morikawa, Kenny Estes, and Scott Martin returning for another state run.
But for head coach Mark Kennett, his coaching staff, and his boys, it’s just another way the Menehune can show the rest of the state that they really belong with the big boys.
Instead of having the first round bye, Waimea plays in the first round on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 3 p.m., against the OIA’s Kaiser.
If the two-time defending KIF champs can trudge past the Cougars, then they’ll face a familiar foe in top-seeded Mililani the next day.
This year’s HHSAA/Meadow Gold Dairies Boys State Soccer Championships will be played at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park and Stadium on O’ahu.
Punahou, Kamehameha-Maui, and Waiakea round out the top four seeds.
