It’s what the people in the surfing and bodyboarding world call an “amp” video.
Local up-and-coming filmmaker Tim Hamilton said the new DVD “Boogie Nation,” which makes its premiere at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) at the the Kilauea Theatre, is one of those videos.
It is free and open to the public.
“It’s the kind of thing you watch and get amped over,” he said.
“You watch it and then you go surf. It’s not a documentary. It’s entertainment with a lot of surfing and music. It’s a good watch, for sure.” Hamilton, along with his buddy Adam Bice, started working on this project several years ago, as a way to support bodyboarding.
Bice said the inspiration for the project came about mostly because the main bodyboarding magazine they were fond of went out of business.
“We were bummed,” Bice said. “So we said, ‘let’s do something about it, and make a video or something.'” Hamilton served as the main producer, traveling across the globe to shoot footage, while Bice did a lot of the editing.
The two are no strangers to making short films.
Last year for the Hawaii Ocean Film Festival, some of Hamilton’s footage of his younger sister Bethany Hamilton was featured in the short piece called “Surfer Girl 2 — The Comeback Kid,” directed by Glen Silber.
Hamilton and Bice also collaborated on short films aired on the public-access channel.
“The coolest part for me was the traveling to Iceland and Tahiti and Australia, and shooting there,” Hamilton said. “It’s got people from all over the world, but we focus mainly on Hawaiian riders.” Bice’s challenge was to make sure the DVD came out OK.
“I had to make sure every wave that we put on the DVD was impressive, that we didn’t show any of the bad waves,” Bice said.
A few recognizable locals in the DVD are Jacob Pembrook from Kalaheo, 12-year-old Travis Smith from Kilauea, Pyper Llewelen from Moloa’a, and David Hubbard of Lihu’e.
While Hamilton and Bice worked on the DVD, Hubbard, last year’s drop-knee world champion, worked on creating a nonprofit organization of the same title.
The Boogie Nation Foundation leaders will use funds raised to support amateur bodyboarding events, make more bodyboarding videos and, in the future, Hamilton said, provide amateur bodyboarders with the funds they need to travel for video shoots or competitions.
A crew consisting of Hamilton, Bice, Hubbard and a few others will be traveling throughout Hawai’i premiering “Boogie Nation” at various venues before taking off over the summer to promote it in California, Europe, South Africa, Australia and Japan.
Hubbard leaves next week for the start of the International Body Boarding Association tour.
The free video premiere at the Kilauea Theatre kicks off the promotional tour, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.
At the drugand alcoholfree event, viewers will get a chance to win prizes such as round-trip inter-island fare and a photo shoot with bodyboardershawaii.com, bodyboarding accessories and T-shirts.
Copies of “Boogie Nation” will also be on sale, with proceeds going to the Boogie Nation Foundation.
