Behind Justin Costi’s second complete-game shutout of the season, the No. 29 University of Hawai‘i Rainbow baseball team (39-13, 16-6 WAC) defeated the San Jose State Spartans (33-22, 12-10) 6-0 at Municipal Stadium Friday.
Costi (8-1) gave up just six hits and one walk while striking out four in his first nine-inning complete game of the year.
Matthew Inouye continued his hot batting in San Jose, going 3-for-4 with three runs and a double.
Jonathan Hee went 2-for-3 with a run while Elijah Christensen was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double.
Esteban Lopez and Robbie Wilder both added two-hit games for UH.
Christensen continued his role as the Rainbows’ run-producer in WAC games, driving in Inouye in the second inning to put UH up 1-0. Hawai‘i then put up another run in the third, driven in by Lopez, with Frash driving in a run in the fourth to make it 3-0.
The Spartans looked to cut into their deficit in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with just one out.
But Costi forced SJSU to hit a ground ball to Frash at third, who stepped on the bag then threw out the batter at first, completing an inning-ending double play that kept the Spartans off the scoreboard.
Hawai‘i then put up a two-run inning in the top of the seventh to push their advantage to six runs.
Meanwhile Costi continued to make quick work of the Spartans, with a double play ending the game in the bottom of the ninth, 6-0.
The two teams will close out the regular season today at 10 a.m.
Hawai‘i remains a half game behind Fresno State, who beat Sacramento State 14-3 in Sacramento, in the WAC standings with each team playing their regular season finales tomorrow.
