The award-winning USA Swimming Water Safety Campaign “Make a Splash” comes to Kaua‘i today.
Swim Kaua‘i Aquatics will host a water safety clinic and open house at the Kaua‘i High School pool beginning at 11 a.m. and running until 1 p.m.
The event will feature water safety demonstrations, swimming, scuba, and water polo exhibitions.
Also included will be “Swim Buddy” relay races, splash contests, and other fun filled events.
The event is open to all Kaua‘i residents and visitors of any age. Admission is free.
Featured water safety speakers include Aaron Habermann, a current Ocean Safety Service Lifeguard and others. Aaron also heads up the Kaua‘i Junior Lifeguard Program.
The “Make a Splash” campaign, now in its fourth year, was initiated by USA Swimming in response to the alarming number of drownings and near-drownings that occur every year.
The initiative reaches out to children and families across the country in an effort to educate them on the importance of proper swim instruction and water safety.
In 2005, more than 90,000 people signed the first ever Water Safety Pledge.

Endo claims top prize at public links event
Paul Endo claimed the top prize at a Kaua‘i Public Links fundraiser golf tournament on May 13-14 at the Wailua Golf Course.
Endo (90-24-66) picked up a $250 gift certificate from event sponsor, Big Save.
Baron Nakamatsu (71-5-66) took second place at a $100 gift certificate, followed by Lyman Kahaunaele (77-10-67, $100), Kiyo Inouye (93-26-67, $50), Mel Mandrigues (81-12-69, $50), and Les Hashimoto (85-16-69, $50). Ties were broken by matching score cards.
Endo birdied the first hole for a net three.
Kahaunaele also birdied the first hole to claim third place.
Winners are asked to pick up their gift certificates at either Big Save or the Wailua Golf Course registration office.
Ballard surf contest coming up
The Second Annual Rochelle Ballard O’Neill Island Girl Jr. Pro surf contest happens Sunday, August 13 at PK’s in Po‘ipu.
The event, sponsored by Reef and Nukumoi Surf Company, is for up and coming women’s surfers from Hawai‘i between the ages of 8 through 21 (Hawai‘i residents only).
The purpose of the contest is to provide a platform for the young women of Hawai‘i to advance from amateur to professional surfing.
Koloa Pop Warner registration
Koloa Pop Warner’s staff will be down at the Koloa Ballpark for the upcoming 2006 tackle football and cheer season.
Registration will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Benefit paintball tournament in July
There will be a 3-man paintball tournament to benefit Robert Nuesca’s Family on Saturday, July 1 at the Aloha Paintball Field.
Registration is $25 per person and the deadline is June 26. You may form your own team or if you don’t have a team, one will be formed for you.
