An Aloha Kids Project cleanup awareness day is planned today at Lydgate Park in Wailua from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Aloha Kids are kids from all communities working as one body of aloha to give back to the environment and their community with the hope of inspiring adults to do the same. The group encourages everone to come out and be part of the cleanup. Families and neighbors are welcomed to participate as well. It’s an opportunity for families to practice doing something important together, states an Aloha Kids press release announcing the event.
Chad Ulmer of Ocean Rhythms and his drummers will provide free intro drumming during signups and after cleanup for those who stay to picnic. They’ll play a variety of African, Puerto Rican and Afro Cuban drumming styles.
Parents are asked to accompany young children unless direct arrangements with other adults have been made. Parents should supervise young children on what trash to pick up and who they work alongside. All kids should work in teams of two or more.
The group has some of the following on hand but it is suggested to bring: Gloves (cloth gardening type or whatever you have); Two trash bags (large kitchen bags ideal for kids/33 gallon lawn and leaf bags for adults); Five gallon paint bucket — great for glass and other recyclables; Basic first-aid kit to keep in your car/back pack.
Bring plenty of water or a personal cup and help yourself to ice water and juice provided.
If you have an orange T-shirt, hat or bandana, wear it — it makes it easier for everyone to spot each other while cleaning up and to know what areas are covered.
There is a picnic planned afterward, so bring picnic items as well.
