Residents and visitors are invited to learn about the Hawaiian art of lauhala weaving on Saturday, July 15.
Lauhala weaving classes are held every third Saturday of each month at the Kaua’i Museum, a recent press release states. Registration is required and can be done by calling 245-6931.
Beginning classes start learning about gathering and preparation of materials and progress to making bracelets, fans, covered objects, mats, and baskets, the release states. Intermediate classes make baskets with handles and handbags. Advanced classes are introduced to round mats, purses, and hats. All materials are provided.
The instructor, Margaret Lovett, has been weaving for 20 years, learning from masters such as Gladys Grace, and the late Esther Makuaole and Ginger Alexander.
Lovett has taught at the Weaving Conference in Kona for 11 years, and has one of her hats on display at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C.
Currently on exhibit at the Kaua’i Museum is a collection of Aunty Esther’s handwoven hats to inspire both new and accomplished weavers.
