The phrase, “Go west, young man,” should be changed to “Go north, young man,” when referring to this Sunday’s 2006 Kauai United Way Golf Tournament.
The 6th annual event is the only benefit high-profile golf tournament held at the Princeville Makai Golf Course.
“We started the tournament with the help of Wala‘au’s Dickie Chang,” Kauai United Way office manager Lori Almarza said. “He wanted to have a golf tournament at Princeville, so we paired up with Wala‘au the first two years.”
From the start, the North Shore course seemed like a good fit for the event.
“We just always had it out there,” Almarza said. “We use all 27 holes, it flows faster. The high point is that it finishes in about four and a half hours.”
Other tournaments sometimes are more lengthy and drag on throughout the afternoon.
“We are still accepting teams,” Almarza said.
The cost per team is $400 or $100 per person.
“You have lunch right there and you go home,” Almarza said. “A lot of people don’t get the chance to play in Princeville. It’s an excuse to go to Princeville.”
Registration for the event is at 8 a.m., followed by a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
The format for the tournament is a four-person modified scramble for 18 holes.
Almarza said hole sponsorships are still available, as well as other ways to give back to the organization, which supports many agencies on the island.
“It’s good food, fellowship and supporting a good cause,” Almarza said. “We want to keep it fun.”
