The Koke‘e Museum’s summer Wonder Walks guided hike series continues this weekend with the Berry Flats Loop on Saturday and a bird-watching excursion along the head of the Kalalau Valley Sunday.
The Berry Flats Trail is family oriented, offering sightings of forest birds and introduced California redwoods, Australian eucalyptus and Japanese Sugi pines. The native koa and ‘ohi‘a lehua trees offer a canopy along the moderate forest loop.
On Sunday, the Pihea Trail is more strenuous but offers incredible views down into the Kalalau Valley and the canopy of the Alakai‘i Swamp. Experienced bird enthusiast and guide David Kuhn will reveal some of Kaua‘i’s native and introduce birds along the way. It’s the last guided hike of the Pihea Trail that the museum will offer this summer.
All hikes meet on the Koke‘e Museum porch at 12:15 p.m. Lunch will not be served, and participants are encouraged to wear hiking boots and bring sunscreen, binoculars and drinking water.
Interested hikers call 335-9975 to register.
