Talk about a living treasure.
Anna Penhallow Bishop Sloggett will soon celebrat her 100th birthday on Kaua‘i.
To celebrate her milestone, there will be an Anna Penhallow Bishop Sloggett 100th Birthday Invitational Scholarship Golf Tournament Sept. 9 at the Wailua Golf Course.
The tournament is just one of the events to celebrate Anna.
A lu‘au lunch has also been planned for Sept. 17 at Gaylord’s at Kilohana.
Anna was born in Lihu‘e on Sept. 17, 1906, to Mary and Walter Scott.
Her maternal grandparents on Kaua’i were William Hyde Rice and Mary Waterhouse Rice.
Anna graduated from Kaua‘i High School in 1924 and attended Mills College in Oakland, Calif. and San Francisco State College.
Anna then became a teacher and spent 35 years at various schools in Hawai‘i, including Kapa‘a, Lihu‘e and Wilcox elementary schools. She has been honored many times and has garnered many teaching awards. She has an annual ‘Women in Theatre’ award in her name, and she was recognized as a Living Treasure by the Kaua‘i Museum.
Anna still drives her own car, enjoys golf weekly and plays bridge with friends.
Funds raised by these events will help to establish the Anna S. Sloggett Endowed Scholarship Fund at Kaua‘i Community College.
The scholarship will support Kaua‘i students pursuing a degree in Elementary Education at Kaua‘i Community College and/or students transferring to UH-Manoa or to UH-Hilo for their baccalaureate degree.
Entry fee for the golf tournament is $75 per person, and the format is a three-person scramble.
Entrants can use up to three mulligans per player for $5 each. Hole sponsorships are available for $100 and will include a personalized message to Anna.
Prize donations are also being welcomed. Checks should be made payable to “UHF-KCC Anna Sloggett Endowment.”
